Cappitron’s Short-Circuited Rant

I forgot to talk about this when I did up my anime criticism picture over at my other gallery [link] So a truly random rant for my Transformer buddies! One reason I found myself dropping off the anime scene was the group of people I was being associated with. It wasn’t because of cosplay, or yaoi fangirls, or…actually, it could also be because of the yaoi fangirls.
BUT!
The people who made me hate what I loved were the weeaboos. Weeaboos, I call ‘em weeabooties, were the people who were so entrenched in Japanese culture, they spent most of their time correcting people about the ‘authentic’ way to pronounce words or scream when terms were not translated into English. Really, these people were so angry about anime outside of Japanese context, it’s a wonder they found any joy in the fandom.

I mostly hated being corrected on the pronunciation of ‘anime’. “Jason, stop saying annie-may; clearly it is pronounced ah-nee-meh, just like the Japanese term.” Actually kid-who-wasn’t-even-born-when-anime-came-to-the-states, ‘anime’ was coined by the French. It is an abbreviation of ‘animation’. Seeing as I am in America, and don’t pronounce animation as ‘ah-nee-mation’, I’ll stick to annie-may.

I also don’t like Japanese names in anime dubs.
I can agree with weeabooties that most Japanese names are slaughtered when said by a cracker…so, why not change the name into an English one? I tried getting into InuYasha, simply because it was one of the only traditionally animated cartoons on at the time that displayed Asianic dominance with celluloid. But cripes…how many people whose names ended with aku does one show need?

I guess when you’re on a xenophobic island then you kinda run out of names pretty quickly. I was absolutely lost at who was the good aku and the bad aku. It kinda makes sense to retain these names since it centered around feudal Japan, but when you make an anime about nineteenth century England, you really don’t need Rudolph Nakamura (I wish I could make this up).

Weeaboos get in trouble with me because they’re hypocrites. Remember the atrocious anime Eureka Seven? It was about the stereotypical whiney submissive kid who secretly liked being abused by older matriarchal women and, of course, had majickal super powers within. What was most awful was the title. It WAS Eureka, but everyone pronounced it oo (as in poo) –wreck-ah. I loved that SciFi channel had a show promo entitled Eureka and they pronounced it correctly (you-reek-ah). Japan is notorious for ‘engrish’; pronouncing words incorrectly. I could forgive the funny pronouncing, seeing as they have no ‘l’ pronunciations in their language.

But they get knocked because they pronounce most English words like how they’re spelled, case in point: Eureka. How is it coolies for Japan to tentacle-monster the English language, but you expect Canadian dub studios to forcefully hyphenate their i’s? That’s not very fay-ire. I mean fair.

Another day, another stupid Transformers joke. I’m a little alarmed that I can now draw Megatron and Optimus from memory now. Anyhoo, if you don’t get the PUNCHline, then obviously you’re not that big a transfan. One of Optimus’ most famous catchphrases was “Autobots: transform and roll out!” and personally, I just wanted to do up a picture of Megatron finally getting ambushed.
